Acupuncture for Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is described as an unpleasant sensation with an urge to move the legs.
Common symptoms
- appear or worsen when staying still in one position
- only appear or worsen at night
- walking or moving the legs relieves the symptoms
RLS can significantly disrupt sleep, negatively impacting quality of life and long-term health. RLS is also associated with anxiety and depression and is has higher prevalence in women than men.
How can acupuncture help Restless Leg Syndrome
Acupuncture promotes the movement of qi (energy), blood and body fluids in the limbs and the release of pain-relieving neuropeptides.
Acupuncture is widely used for RLS management in Asian countries.
Studies have been published in recent years to support the effectiveness of acupuncture for RLS. A meta study published in 2023 found that:
- Acupuncture reduced RLS symptoms, both in the legs and overall quality of life.
- Acupuncture is a safe treatment method for RLS, with no significant side effects.
The RCTs in the study were small in scale, so the researchers recommended further large-scale research to confirm the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for RLS.
