The Latest Research
A 2025 review in Frontiers in Medicine, drawing together 13 separate systematic reviews, found acupuncture outperformed both sham treatment and standard fibromyalgia medication for pain, and produced a meaningful improvement in overall quality of life (Choi et al., 2025).
A newer 2026 meta-analysis in the Journal of Pain Research adds further weight: acupuncture produced a significant reduction in pain compared with control treatment, alongside short-term improvements in stiffness, quality of life, mood, anxiety, depression and the ability to work (Jin et al., 2026), with benefits still measurable beyond eight weeks. Fibromyalgia is a notoriously difficult condition to study, and researchers continue to call for larger, more standardised trials, but the direction of the evidence across multiple independent reviews is consistent: acupuncture can meaningfully ease fibromyalgia pain and improve day-to-day wellbeing.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture has one of the strongest safety records of any therapy used for chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia. The 2025 Frontiers in Medicine overview found no serious adverse events reported in any of the fibromyalgia trials it examined, only mild, short-lived reactions such as bruising, soreness or discomfort at the needle site. This is backed up by the largest UK safety survey of its kind, covering over 34,000 acupuncture treatments given by professional acupuncturists, which also recorded no serious adverse events (MacPherson et al., 2001).
Because fibromyalgia often involves heightened sensitivity to touch and pain, your practitioner will talk this through with you at your first appointment and can adapt their technique — using fewer needles, a lighter touch, or shorter retention times — to keep treatment comfortable.
Every treatment at Islington Acupuncture is carried out by British Acupuncture Council registered practitioners. BAcC members complete a minimum of three years’ degree-level training and follow a strict Code of Safe Practice covering hygiene and clinical safety. We use pre-sterilised, single-use, disposable needles for every patient.
What to Expect – Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia affects everyone differently, so your first appointment starts with a thorough conversation about your pain, fatigue, sleep and any other symptoms, alongside a broader look at your health and lifestyle. Your practitioner uses this to build a treatment plan.
The needles used are hair-fine, sterile and single-use. Most people feel little more than a light tap as they’re inserted, and if you’re especially sensitive to touch, your practitioner can adjust their approach to keep things comfortable. Once in place, you may notice a mild ache, tingling or warmth around the needle — a sensation known as ‘de qi’ — which is a normal, expected part of treatment. Needles are typically left in place for around 20 minutes while you rest.
Many people feel deeply relaxed during and after treatment. Some notice a temporary dip in energy or a slight, short-lived increase in symptoms for a day or so as the body responds. This is common and usually settles quickly. Research suggests regular frequent (weekly) sessions bring the strongest results, so your practitioner will talk you through a realistic course length and review your progress with you as you go.
