Acupuncture for neck & shoulder pain

Neck and shoulder pain are among the most common reasons people seek acupuncture, and some of the most satisfying to treat. Whether you’re dealing with a stiff neck from long hours at a desk, a frozen shoulder that has gradually robbed you of movement, or chronic tension that travels into your head and arms, acupuncture can make a meaningful difference.

At Islington Acupuncture, we treat both acute and long-standing neck and shoulder conditions. We work with your full health picture, not just the site of pain, and take time to understand how and why your symptoms developed. We regularly treat:

  • Chronic or recurrent neck pain
  • Cervical spondylosis (wear and tear in the neck)
  • Tension headaches and migraines originating from neck tension
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Rotator cuff injuries and shoulder impingement
  • Shoulder bursitis
  • Whiplash and post-injury stiffness
  • Desk and postural pain
  • Pain radiating into the arm or hand

What the research shows

Acupuncture is one of the better-evidenced complementary treatments for musculoskeletal pain. Here is what current research tells us:

Neck Pain

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 26 randomised controlled trials and 3,520 participants (published up to October 2024) found acupuncture produced significantly greater reductions in pain intensity compared to inert treatment. (Xie et al., 2025).

A separate 2024 systematic review focused on the durability of results, finding acupuncture as an adjunct therapy provided sustained pain relief at both three and six months after treatment ended — an important finding for people with chronic or recurrent symptoms. (Fang et al., 2024).

Shoulder Pain

A major individual patient data meta-analysis — among the most cited papers in acupuncture research — confirmed that acupuncture has a clinically meaningful and lasting effect for shoulder pain, in addition to back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, and chronic headache, when compared to no treatment or sham acupuncture (Vickers et al., 2018).

A 2024 meta-analysis of 13 randomised controlled trials found acupuncture produced greater short and medium-term pain relief and functional improvement for rotator cuff conditions compared to corticosteroid injection and other interventions, though long-term outcomes were comparable and larger trials are needed. (Zhang et al., 2024).

How we work

Your first appointment includes a detailed assessment of your pain — its onset, nature, what makes it better or worse — alongside a Chinese medicine evaluation of your overall health. We use this to build a treatment plan specific to you.

Treatment typically combines acupuncture with targeted needle placement around the affected areas. We may also use electroacupuncture (gentle electrical stimulation through the needles) for more stubborn or long-standing conditions, which research supports for musculoskeletal pain.

We will also discuss any postural, lifestyle, or movement factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and can recommend appropriate exercises or refer you where needed.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on how long you’ve had the problem, its severity, and how your body responds to treatment. For acute pain or a recent injury, improvement is often felt within two to four sessions. For chronic or long-standing conditions, a course of six to eight weekly sessions is a reasonable starting plan, after which we review progress together.

Many people continue with monthly ‘maintenance’ sessions once their pain has resolved, to prevent recurrence.
