Acupuncture for insomnia & to aid better sleep

Research on the benefits of sleep has revealed more about the negative effects of insomnia on body and mind. Information is generally a good thing, but it can make insomnia even harder to manage if we restlessly fret about its effects on our long-term health. At our Islington clinic, we treat insomnia and sleep problems using acupuncture aimed at the root cause, not just the symptom.

Acupuncture for insomnia in London

Do you recognise any of these?

  • difficulty in maintaining sleep
  • trouble getting to sleep
  • non-refreshing sleep
  • dream disturbed sleep
  • fatigue & poor daytime functioning
  • a state of hyperactivity during day and night

Understanding your sleep pattern

Insomnia isn’t one single problem – it shows up differently from person to person, and the pattern often points towards what’s driving it. We pay close attention to this during your consultation, since it shapes how we approach treatment.

Trouble falling asleep (sleep-onset insomnia)

Lying awake for long periods before drifting off is often linked to a busy, overactive mind or evening stress — what practitioners sometimes call an inability to ‘switch off’ the analytical brain. This pattern is particularly common in people with demanding jobs or high anxiety levels.

Trouble staying asleep (sleep-maintenance insomnia)

Waking repeatedly through the night or waking early and being unable to get back to sleep, often has a different underlying pattern to sleep-onset difficulty, and can be linked to hormonal changes, underlying stress, or the body’s stress-response system being overactive.

Non-refreshing or dream-disturbed sleep

Some people sleep for a reasonable number of hours but wake feeling unrested or experience vivid or unsettling dreams that disrupt sleep quality.

Identifying which of these patterns (or combination of patterns) applies to you is one of the first things we do, since a treatment plan aimed at sleep-onset difficulty looks different to one aimed at frequent waking.

Stress, anxiety and sleep

Stress and poor sleep tend to feed each other: stress and anxiety make it harder to sleep, and poor sleep makes it harder to manage stress and anxiety the next day. This cycle is one of the most common patterns we see in clinic and breaking it is often central to improving sleep long-term.

How does acupuncture help with insomnia?

Acupuncturists aim to identify the underlying pattern driving your insomnia and treat from there, rather than only addressing the symptom of poor sleep. During your first consultation, we’ll take a thorough case history covering general health, work and home stresses, constitutional factors, diet and other lifestyle factors, and explain how we’re working and what changes to realistically look out for. Our treatment is aimed at creating long-term change rather than a quick, temporary fix.

Research suggests acupuncture may:

  • Increase nocturnal melatonin secretion
  • Reduce sympathetic (stress-related) nervous system activity
  • Support the brain chemistry associated with relaxation

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 randomised controlled trials found acupuncture-based treatment was associated with improved sleep outcomes, including reduced insomnia severity scores and better sleep efficiency, alongside higher melatonin and lower cortisol in the studies that measured them.

As with much acupuncture research, trial quality and consistency varied, so this should be read as good supporting evidence rather than definitive proof.

What to expect from treatment

Your first appointment

Your first session is a thorough consultation, typically around an hour, covering your sleep pattern, general health, stress levels, diet and lifestyle. We’ll talk through what we think is driving your insomnia and what a realistic treatment plan looks like.

Ongoing treatment

Most patients have weekly sessions initially, with progress reviewed regularly. Sleep problems that have built up over months or years typically take a course of several sessions to meaningfully shift, and we’ll be upfront if progress is slower than expected so we can adjust the approach.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have acupuncture while taking sleeping tablets or other medication?

Yes – acupuncture can be safely combined with conventional medication for insomnia. Please tell your acupuncturist about any medication you’re taking, including over-the-counter sleep aids, so treatment can be planned appropriately.

Will acupuncture help me come off sleeping medication?

Some patients do find they’re able to reduce their reliance on sleep medication as their sleep improves, but this should always be done in consultation with your GP or prescriber.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on how long you’ve experienced insomnia and what’s driving it. Most patients have a course of weekly sessions rather than a single treatment, with progress reviewed along the way.

The research evidence

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Medicine synthesised 12 randomised controlled trials and found acupuncture-based interventions improved sleep outcomes, including reduced insomnia severity and improved sleep efficiency, alongside higher serum melatonin and lower salivary cortisol in the subset of trials measuring these markers (As with much acupuncture research, these trials involve relatively small sample groups).
